NYC Socialite Zelda Kaplan Dies In Front Row Of New York Fashion Week Show

Zelda Kaplan, a popular New York City socialite the New York Times once dubbed the “oldest most beloved night owl,” collapsed and died Wednesday at New York Fashion Week. According to reports, 95-year-old Kaplan was sitting in the front row at the Joanna Mastroianni fashion show when she sudden fell forward. She was taken outside the tent and doctors at the scene attempted to resuscitate her to no avail.

Kaplan was pronounced dead at Roosevelt Hospital. A hospital spokeswoman did not release the cause of death.

Kaplan’s transition from housewife to legendary socialite was the subject of the 2003 HBO documentary Her Name Is Zelda. She was known for her African-inspired fashion, love of art shows and support of women’s rights around the world.

Joanna Mastroianni released a statement saying Kaplan “will be sorely missed."
