A study released by Michigan State University showed that divorce can cause serious health issues for the parties involved due to the stress of a break-up. The study followed divorced couples for a 15 year period and the results posted this month showed that people, who failed to remarry, suffered a rapid decline in health than couples who remained married.
Other studies show that men can suffer more in the long term if they don’t remarry, but women are more affected in the short term because of loss of financial and social security and loss of status, which highlights the need to retain an accomplished divorce attorney.
High-conflict divorces can be so psychologically damaging that they can be qualified as Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. Some women have experienced symptoms such as anxiety attacks, flashbacks, insomnia and psychosomatic illnesses.
Loneliness often follows in the wake of a divorce. Psychologist Dr. James Lynch author of “The Broken Heart: The Medical Consequences of Loneliness” says that the connection between health and emotional stress are now being recognized.
Under stress, the body creates cortisol, which can inhibit the immune system and lead to illness. Stress has also been found to cause an increase in aggressive breast cancer in women.
For many a divorce lawyer can help alleviate some of the many stresses associated with dissolution. Staying in an unhappy marriage can in turn create a great deal of stress. Ending a marriage can be easier on the interested parties if they hire a divorce attorney and seek counseling if they cannot resolve the emotional issues.
