Boston’s Franklin Park Zoo is facing the possibility of euthanizing hundreds of animals in its care after budget cuts have left the landmark facing closure.
More than half of the funding for Franklin Park Zoo, and its counterpart Stoneham Zoo, comes from the state and recent budget cuts instituted by Gov. Deval Patrick dropped Massachusetts financial support from $6.5 million to $4.5 million.
The budget cuts will likely force the zoo to lay off nearly all of their 165 employees and find new homes for more than 1,000 animals. Officials have said the animals that can’t be relocated may have to be destroyed.
