The interim government in Honduras has lifted an overnight curfew that has been in place since June 28, declaring their objective of quelling opposition protests had been achieved.
That curfew was imposed two weeks ago following a coup that removed President Manuel Zelaya from office and replaced him with Roberto Micheletti. The days that followed the coup saw large protests from Zelaya supporters and calls from several international leaders to restore the president to office. Those calls have been largely ignored by the interim government which has stated Zelaya would be arrested if he were to return to the country.
To ensure order was in place the Micheletti ordered a curfew to keep people off the streets overnight but in a public broadcast on Sunday the government said that objective had been reached, declaring, “The government was able not only to reduce crime in the whole country, but also to restore calm to the people of Honduras.”
Zelaya and Micheletti have met separately with Costa Rican President Oscar Arias in an attempt to come to an agreement surrounding the instability yet neither side has found common ground.
The Honduran Congress, Supreme Court and military all supported the coup after accusing Zelaya of attempting to change the country’s constitution in an attempt to extend his presidential term.
