Fierce fighting between Malian troops and a group calling itself al-Qaeda in the Islamic Magreb has resulted in the freedom of a Swiss hostage who had been held by the militants for more than six months.
News of the hostage’s freedom was revealed in a statement released by the Swiss Foreign Ministry which declared, “The Swiss Foreign Ministry learnt with joy that the efforts towards the liberation of the last Swiss hostage in Mali have been successful.”
Werner Geiner had been traveling with his wife and two other tourists when they were captured in Niger, along the Mali border in January. His wife had already been released but Geiner remained in captivity for several months while the group demanded the release of a radical Muslim cleric who is being held in a UK prison.
Geiner’s wife, Gabriella Barco, and Marianne Petzold were released on April 22 and in June the group said they had executed British hostage Edwin Dyer.
