Polls Close in Republic of Congo, Opposition Boycotts Process

The polls have closed in the Republic of Congo and President Denis Sassou-Nguesso is almost certainly guaranteed another seven-year term as opposition leaders boycotted the vote on the grounds it would be neither free nor fair.

Those opposition leaders had accused the government of boosting the electoral roll figure to secure a victory. Clement Mierrassa, head of the Congolese Social Democratic Party, stated prior to the poll opening “No-one should go and vote on Sunday. Stay at home - we don't want an electoral hold-up or a parody of an election.”

According to the government more than two million people had registered to vote but that number has been dismissed by the opposition, calling it an inflated number set to keep Sassou-Nguesso in power.
