Saddam Hussein was removed from court proceedings on Tuesday after he became disruptive and shouted a verse from the Quran, “Fight them and God will punish them”.
After Hussein was removed his co-defendant, Hussein Rashid, began shouting at the prosecutors. The former army commander under Hussein then threw a punch at the court bailiff who was trying to force him back into his chair.
Along with Hussein and Mohammed, there are five other defendants involved in a trial that involves charges of genocide and various war crimes stemming from their involvement in a Kurdish rebels crackdown from 1987-88.
Hussein is charged with genocide and if found guilty could face the death penalty.
During Tuesday’s hearings, a Kurdish woman detailed her 6 ½ months in a detention camp. She testified to witnessing women being raped, children being killed and chemicals being used against detainees.
Hussein and his co-defendants have been on trial since August 21.
