A conference in Zimbabwe set up to discuss a new constitution had to be abandoned after fighting between rival delegations broke out and riot police had to be called to restore order.
Thousands of delegates and supporters representing President Robert Mugabe interrupted the meeting as they broke out in song and dancing. Other delegates who supported Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai walked out of the conference while others began throwing items at the Mugabe supporters.
The conference had been opened by Parliamentary speaker Lovemore Moyo but within minutes of expressing his views that a constitution was about “the people deciding how they are governed,” and “not about the government or anyone else telling the people how they want to be governed” his speech was muted by the Mugabe supporters.
Moyo, a member of the Movement for Democratic Change, walked out of the venue in protests and fighting between MDC supporters and the Mugabe-led ZANU-PF supporters quickly developed.
