Many Fosamax users began to complain about suffering unusual femur (thigh bone) fractures upon using the drug.  After many complaints about spontaneous femur fractures, the FDA requested that bisphosphonate manufacturers send any reports about femur fractures to them in 2008.  In 2010, the FDA warned the public that long term use of bisphosphonates may cause atypical femur fractures. The FDA now requires all drug manufacturers to include warnings on their labels, alerting consumers of the possible risk of femur fractures in long-term users.

In 2011, The Journal of the American Medical Association published an article that found women who were treated with bisphosphonates for five years or longer were at increased risk for thigh bone fractures. Physicians began seeing patients that have taken bisphosphonates for a long period of time sustain thigh bone fractures from doing everyday activities like walking down the stairs or low energy exercise. Physicians thought this was very unusual since the femur bone is one of the strongest bones in the body.
