Costello & Mains partner Kevin M. Costello testified on Monday, February 6, 2012, before the State Assembly "Women and Children" committee regarding the committee's consideration of AR-50, a resolution urging the United States Congress to pass the "Paycheck Fairness Act." This Act would expand and solidify the rights of women to be compensated equally with their male counterparts for substantially the same work.
"I was honored and pleased to be asked to testify," says Kevin, a
New Jersey employment lawyer. “The Women and Children committee is a new Assembly committee this year, and I'm very satisfied, as an employment and civil rights attorney, that the committee immediately turned its attention to something not only of importance to New Jersey's working women, but also to working women across the Country." Kevin refers to President Obama's State of the Union address, which in part continued to focus attention, as the President had in the past, upon the wage disparity between men and women for substantially the same work.
"The gap is still about .23 cents on the dollar," says partner Deborah Mains, "with regional variations depending on where in the Country, and even, as concerns New Jersey, where in the State, you happen to look. Yet what's clear is that there is a gap between men and women for substantially the same work, and most surprising and distressing of all, this gap is greatest at the highest educational and professional levels."
Kevin is pleased to report that the committee unanimously voted to release AR-50 to the Assembly, where Kevin hopes that the resolution will pass. "I don't know whether or not congress will respond, or whether or not other states are doing the same thing, but I'm proud that New Jersey may be adding the voice of its citizens to a problem of regional and national importance."
