Dozens of people died and hundreds of others were injured Wednesday when a train slammed into a platform at a train station in Buenos Aires, Argentina. The accident happened around 8:30 a.m. at Once Station. Authorities say at least 49 people were killed and more than 600 others were injured.
The train was traveling about 16 mph hour when it crashed into a barrier at the end of the platform. The impact sent train cars crashing into each other. Most of the deaths occurred in the first two cars. Hours after the crash, rescue teams continued working to free about 30 passengers who were trapped in the wreckage.
The cause of the exact crash remains unclear, but Transportation Secretary JP Schiavi said authorities “assume that there was some fault in the brakes.”
