Training for a 3,200-Mile Barefoot Odyssey is No Jog in the Park

Ultra-runner Steps it Up Before X-Country Run

BRATTLEBORO, VT - Preparation for a world-record attempt to run, barefoot, from New York City to Los Angeles requires a man with dedication, focus, a rigorous training schedule, and a little bit of insanity. Tellman Knudson is that man.

Knudson is ratcheting up the intensity of his jogging regiment as he prepares to embark on a 3,200-mile, coast-to-coast running odyssey. With an ultimate goal of raising $100,000,000 to combat teen homelessness, the run is scheduled to depart New York City on September 9, 2009.

Hank Lange, an Olympic-caliber personal trainer hired to whip Knudson into shape, has been increasing the mileage goals for his student every week. This week's goal: 100 miles. Today, Knudson ran 25 miles, beginning his route near his home here and travelling south into Massachusetts as Lange provided support alongside on a bicycle.

"Everything feels good," said Knudson after his near-marathon-length session. "My legs feel good. My head is clear. The start date is coming up quick, but we'll be ready."
