Buffalo, NY- As far as perks go; teachers in Buffalo have one of the best. These lucky men and women can have their liposuction or other cosmetic surgeries for free, paid for by the taxpayers.
This has gotten a lot of attention, especially since so many state and city budgets are facing serious shortfalls and the town of Buffalo is no exception.
All of the 3,400 teachers in the Buffalo school district can get liposuction, facelifts and Botox with no copays and completely free of charge for them. The Buffalo school district paid $5.9 million for plastic surgeries in 2011.
This is a perk the teachers enjoy, but they have also said it is something they are willing to let go of. The teachers’ union president stated that the contract expired ten years ago and is willing to negotiate a new contract.
“We’ve told the district from the beginning of negotiations six or eight years ago that we’re willing to give it up so long as the district comes back to the table with us.” said Phillip Rumore president of Buffalo New York Teachers Federation.
The President of the school board said the city could hire 240 new teachers if they didn’t have to pay for the plastic surgery. This is an unusual rider and though liposuction or Botox can be beneficial to a teacher and help them boost their self-esteem, many are left to wonder if it is fair for the taxpayer to foot the bill.
