In 2008, The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) contacted Merck about the reports of femur fractures. Sixteen months later the drug manufacturer added patients’ reports of femur fractures to the list of possible side effect reported by patients in Fosamax’s package insert. In October 2010, the FDA warned the public that Fosamax and other bisphosphonates put users at risk for thigh bone fractures. The FDA now requires all drug manufacturers to include the risk of femur fractures on all bisphosphonate labels.

Several studies have associated long-term use of Fosamax with an increased risk for femur fractures. A 2011 article published by The Journal of the American Medical Association supported this claim. The study found that women who took Fosamax for five years or longer were at an increased risk for femur fractures.
