February is New Orleans’ Most-visited Month

More than a million travelers are expected to descend on the Big Easy this month as the city celebrates Mardi Gras

If you’re planning a trip to New Orleans in the next week or so, good luck finding a parking space. February is the month of Mardi Gras, or “Fat Tuesday,” and more people come to New Orleans at this time of year than at any other. In 2011, the city saw more than one million people line the streets to watch the fantastical parades and participate in the world’s biggest party. This year promises to be no different.

Staying in New Orleans in February

Last year, New Orleans hotels reported that their rooms were booked full in the two weeks leading up to the celebration. Party-goers looking for a last minute hotel deal in the Big Easy would do well to look outside of the French Quarter. The further away from epicenter of Mardi Gras one goes, the better the chances are of finding an available hotel room.

After Mardi Gras, hotels are much easier to find. This year the date for the big celebration is February 21. Those looking to stay in the New Orleans after this date will likely find better rates.

Getting Around New Orleans During Mardi Gras

As mentioned, parking anywhere around the French Quarter or downtown is extremely difficult this time of year. Some hotels offer shuttle rides (usually for a fee) to and from the celebrations, and there is public transportation system that will carry passengers all around the city. Be aware, however, that traffic may be congested due to road closures and the high volume of visitors.

Once in the city, most major attractions and areas of interest are within easy walking distance, as is the business district. Most of the revelry that Mardi Gras is famous for—drinking in the streets, outrageous costumes—is confined to the French Quarter. Outside of this area, New Orleans is very friendly, even during Mardi Gras.

Other Times to Visit

New Orleans is a popular city for tourists no matter what time of year, but those who don’t like crowds would do better to stay away during Mardi Gras season. New Orleans has a temperate climate, which makes nearly any time a good time of year to visit the Big Easy. The city has a long history, delicious food, and unique culture. In 2012 Louisiana celebrates 200 years of being a state, making this year a good one to plan a trip to the New Orleans area.
