Seven Marines Killed in Helicopter Training Accident
We expect people to die in combat, but rarely think that training exercises could turn tragic. That is exactly what happened Wednesday after two helicopters collided during a routine training exercise and caused the deaths of seven marines.
Investigators are trying to determine what caused the two helicopters, an AH-1W Cobra and UH-1 Huey to crash in mid-air during the exercise Wednesday night. The skies were clear and the weather was mild. The investigation could take weeks.
The military trains in the Chocolate Mountain area, on the border of California and Arizona because the desert conditions and mountain ranges are similar to the geography in Afghanistan.
This was the fifth aviation accident since March for the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing located at Miramar Marine Corps Air Station in San Diego. Six of the marines who died were from Pendleton and one was from Yuma, Arizona.
The Marines stated they would release the names of the deceased Friday afternoon.
