Recovery is an ongoing voyage
Recovery from substance abuse and dependency is like an ongoing journey, which is something that many individuals do not realize. The treatment stage is just a brief moment in your life but once you enter the recovery stage, you never leave it. Although it sounds harsh, you will always be defined as a recovering alcoholic or drug addict. Conversely, there is a school of thought that feels just the opposite and that the recovery stage eventually come to a close.
5 stages of recovery
Regardless of whether or not the addiction recovery stage is ongoing or eventually comes to a close, there are 5 stages that the individual typically goes through whenever they enter a Florida center for recovery program. The following will give you an idea of what is involved in each of these 5 stages:
- Awareness and initial acknowledgement – this involves being aware of the addiction and admitting that the individual needs professional help. In this stage, the perspective shifts from total denial to admitting the issue exists and help is needed.
- Consideration and research – this involves becoming more knowledgeable about the addiction and how it impacts the individual and those around them.
- Exploring recovery – recognized as the first true stage of recovery. The individual has progressed past the denial phase and that they want to overcome the addiction and move toward successful recovery.
- Early recovery – this is a fragile stage and is characterized by the first basic signs of early recovery. It is at this point that the individual embarks on the journey of building themselves a new life.
- Active aftercare, maintenance, and support – this is probably the most important stage of addiction recovery. This is the stage that one school of thought proclaims has no ending while the other school of thought proclaims has no end. By the time the individual enters this stage, they are monitoring their feelings, their relationships, and their thoughts.
