Tharcisse Renzaho, the former governor of the Rwandan capital Kigali, has been sentenced to life in prison by a UN court following his conviction on five counts related to the 1994 genocide that left more than 800,000 dead.
According to prosecutors Renzaho was a central figure in the mass killings as he controlled the city’s police force and local officials. Through his control Renzaho was able to order road blocks and distribute weapons to Hutu militia with an end goal of eradicating the Tutsi population in Rwanda.
Following the end of the genocide Renzaho fled to the Democratic Republic of Congo where he was arrested in 2002. Charges were brought against the former governor and he was turned over to face the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda where he faced counts including rape, murder and genocide.
Renzaho has denied the charges and his attorney has told reporters his client attempted to save lives during the genocide. An appeal is expected to be filed on his behalf.
