Glavine shuts down Cards, Beltran puts two on the board for Mets win.

Tom Glavine threw seven scoreless innings and allowed only four hits as the New York Mets took game one of the NLCS against the St. Louis Cardinals 2-0.

Glavine’s pitching performance was matched by Cardinals starter Jeff Weaver for five innings, but it was the sixth that made the difference. With the game still scoreless in the bottom of the sixth Weaver gave up a single to Mets catcher Paul Lo Duca and Carlos Beltran followed with a bomb to right that hit the scoreboard for the 2-0 lead.

While the runs were plated by Beltran, it was the arm of 40-year-old Tom Glavine that silenced the bats of St. Louis. Entering his 34th career post season game, Glavine felt the weight of New York on his back. Already faced with injuries to Pedro Martinez and Orlando Hernandez, the Mets rotation could ill afford a poor performance. Glavine didn’t disappoint; displaying commanding control and mixing pitches to keep Cardinal hitters off-balanced Glavine turned back the clock and continued his great postseason, extending his scoreless streak to 13 innings.

Game two will be played tonight in New York where the Mets will start John Maine while the Cardinals will counter with Chris Carpenter. Game time is 8:05 pm EST.

The Detroit Tigers are looking to continue their incredible run through the AL this afternoon. They will face the Oakland A’s at 4:30 pm in Detroit. The game will feature a pair of 14 game winners with Oakland starting Dan Haren and Detroit going with Jeremy Bonderman. Detroit has a 2-0 lead over the A’s in the best-of-seven series.
