Two French security advisers working in the Somali capital of Mogadishu have been kidnapped by armed gunmen wearing police uniforms.
According to reports the security advisers, who had been on an official mission to assist the Somali government, were in the Sahafi Hotel in Mogadishu when the gunmen entered the building and took them away. The pair had checked into the hotel as journalists but the gunmen apparently knew their true identity.
The Sahafi Hotel is in an area of Mogadishu that is controlled by the UN-backed interim government but Islamist militants have stepped up their assaults in the city in an attempt to seize power. The government has relied on African Union peacekeepers to help defend the city but the 4,300 troops have been facing a consistent wave of violence and are not authorized to pursue the militants.
