Scorsese looks to stay on top of box office with The Departed; The Grudge 2 and Man of the Year aiming for big opening weekends.

With Jack Nicholson, Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon, Mark Wahlberg and Martin Sheen bringing Scorsese his biggest opening weekend ever, The Departed looks to build on its $27 million debut with another large number.

To keep the top spot The Departed will have to fend off newcomers to the box office race, The Grudge 2 and Man of the Year.

The Grudge 2, with Halloween right around the corner, is expected to pull in a big number. Opening weekend two years ago brought the first installment $39.1 million with the help of Sarah Michelle Gellar. Gellar returns, but just briefly in the sequel.

Robin Williams returns to the big screen with Man of the Year. Backed by a strong cast that includes Christopher Walken, Laura Linney, Lewis Black and Jeff Goldblum, Man of the Year has a shot at earning big money.

Last weeks number two, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, will add to its $19.2 million opening with the same crowd that watches The Grudge 2.

For the kids, Open Season continued to do well with $16 million, facing little competition in the animated genre.

As for Jessica Simpson, her role in Employee of the Month brought the film a surprising $11.8 million last weekend and could do the same this weekend after receiving positive feedback from movie goers.
