Bob Ney faces up to 10 years in prison after pleading guilty to conspiracy and making false statements.

Rep. Bob Ney stood before Judge Ellen S. Huvelle and pleaded guilty to conspiracy and making false statements in relation to his receiving money and gifts in exchange for official influence.

The republican from Ohio did not immediately resign from his position in Congress but an outcry from democrats and republicans have called for his expulsion, and the White House wants the congressman to resign as well.

Ney’s attorney has said his client would resign before sentencing on January 19, but many see that as an attempt to continue to collect on his $165,000 annual salary.

It was Ney’s involvement with Jack Abramoff that proved to be his downfall. Abramoff, the one time Republican lobbyist, pleaded guilty in January to charges surrounding money and gifts in exchange for political favors.

Among the many gifts that Ney accepted were all-expense-paid trips that included Scotland, New Orleans and New York as well as meals and sports and concert tickets.

Although Ney faces a maximum of 10 years in prison, federal prosecuters have recommended 27 month and a fine between $5,000 and $60,000.
