Authorities in Chardon, Ohio have confirmed one of the five students wounded in a shooting at Chardon High School this morning has died. The student’s name and age has not been released.
“There is one deceased student. That’s the sad news for all of us today,” Chardon Police Chief Tim McKenna told reporters.
The shooting happened around 7:40 a.m. in the school’s cafeteria. Witnesses say the gunman, a male student whose name has not been released, shot five rounds before a teacher chased him out of the building. The teen ran a short distance from the school and then turned himself in to a bystander. He is currently being held at the Geauga County Safety Center.
All schools in the Chardon School District have been closed. School Superintendent Jospeh Bergant called the shooting a “horrible tragedy.” "Our prayers go out to the five victims and their families," he said.
