Matt Cassel Inks Six-Year, $63 Million Deal with Kansas City Chiefs

Matt Cassel has gone from career backup quarterback to one of the highest paid players in the NFL after signing a six-year deal with the Kansas City Chiefs that will pay him $63 million, with $28 million guaranteed.

Cassel entered the 2008 NFL season as a backup for New England Patriots starter Tom Brady but after Brady went down in the first week the former USC Trojan stepped in and led the team to an 11-5 record, just missing the AFC playoffs.

In February Cassel was designated by the Patriots as a franchise player and signed a one-year contract worth $14.561 million. Shortly after signing the deal Cassel, along with linebacker Mike Vrabel, was dealt to the Chiefs for a second-round pick.
