Knoxville Law Firm Offers Information on Birth Defects Caused by Antidepressants

The Knoxville injury attorneys at Greg Coleman Law are pleased to announce that their website offers information on birth defects caused by popular antidepressants. A class of antidepressants called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) have been linked to birth defects in infants. Common SSRIs include Paxil, Zoloft, Celexa and Lexapro. If your baby has been diagnosed with a birth defect after an SSRI was used during the pregnancy, you may be entitled to legal recourse. SSRIs work by blocking a receptor in the brain that absorbs the chemical serotonin. Low serotonin levels are linked to depression and anxiety, and a boost of serotonin has proven to be effective. SSRIs are used to treat a variety of mood disorders, including social anxiety disorder, depression and panic disorder.

Findings from studies have shown that babies that were exposed to an SSRI during the first trimester of pregnancy had a 60 percent higher chance of being born with a birth defect. Common SSRI birth defects include heart defects, epilepsy, atrial septal defects, epilepsy, spina bifida, cleft palate, limb deformities and pulmonary hypertension. These birth defects can be severe and life-altering to the infants and their families. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration now advises pregnant woman and those trying to conceive to stop using antidepressants altogether.

Tennessee parents whose children have been diagnosed with a birth defect after the mother used an SSRI during pregnancy may be entitled to compensation. An SSRI birth defect lawsuit could allow parents the opportunity to seek compensation for medical bills, pain and suffering and other losses. Parents can find out if they are eligible to file an SSRI birth defect lawsuit by seeking a legal consultation from the Knoxville injury attorneys at Greg Coleman Law.
