Despite compiling a 368-280 record in his four seasons as manager of the Oakland A’s, Ken Macha was fired by the club on Monday.
Macha led the A’s to a 93-69 record this past year and swept the Minnesota Twins in the first round of the American League playoffs. The A’s were then swept by the Detroit Tigers, marking the end of Macha’s tenure as A’s manager.
While there was growing frustration with the A’s continuing failure to reach the World Series, it may have been Macha’s indifference to his own players that brought the ax down.
Many of the players on the A’s have verbalized their dissatisfaction with the way Macha approaches his players. There has been no word on who the A’s may get to fill the position. Earlier today Lou Piniella reportedly came to an agreement with the Chicago Cubs to replace Dusty Baker as their new manager.
