Des Moines, IA- An Iowa state trooper had to be hospitalized Wednesday after a semi-truck hit his patrol car while assisting at an accident scene.
State Trooper Jeremy Shaffer was in his patrol car with an accident victim at the end of an entrance ramp on U.S. Highway 20 eastbound that connects with Interstate 35.
Shaffer was responding to a previous accident and had one of the drivers involved in that accident in the back of his patrol car while he gathered information. A semi-truck traveling down the ramp struck the patrol car.
Shaffer and the driver were both injured, though the injuries were not life-threatening. They were taken to Webster City hospital. The patrol car was totaled.
Authorities have stated that the patrol car may have been wholly or partially off the roadway with the lights flashing. They are not certain why the truck hit the patrol car or if the driver was speeding.
Roads were slushy because of ice and snow and visibility was low due to high winds and blowing snow.
The truck driver was not injured.
The size and weight of a semi-truck makes them harder to stop in emergency situations. Drivers, who do not take necessary precautions can be held accountable, by a truck accident attorney, for the injuries and property destruction that ensues.
Truck accident lawyers work very hard to build strong case for their clients. The devotion a truck accident attorney has to their clients assures they will receive favorable settlements for their injuries and other damages.
