A 7.8 magnitude earthquake shook New Zealand Wednesday night
and prompted the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Hawaii to issue a tsunami
alert.
The quake hit off the south-west tip of New Zealand,
about 100 miles west of Invercargill. The Warning Center detected a small tsunami
and issued a warning, which was later canceled. “An earthquake of this size
has the potential to generate a destructive tsunami that can strike coastlines
in the region near the epicenter within minutes to hours,” the center said in a
statement.
No damages from the earthquake have been reported. A 5.8
magnitude aftershock was detected shortly after the quake.
