Thirty-three million fan votes and three wildcard picks by the judges determined the fate of the top 25 American Idol contestants on last night’s live elimination show. The results came after two nights of live performances by the top 13 guys and top 12 girls. Host Ryan Seacrest said the top 5 guys and top 5 girls who received the most fan votes would move on to the next round of the competition. Six lucky contestants were then called on to perform for judges Jennifer Lopez, Steven Tyler and Randy Jackson, but only three moved on as the wildcard picks.
The votes resulted in Phillip Phillips, Joshua Ledet, Heejun Han, Colton Dixon and Jermaine Jones moving for the guys, and Jessica Sanchez, Hollie Cavanagh, Shannon Magrane, Skyler Laine and Elise Testone moving on for the girls. Judges chose Deandre Brackensick, Jeremy Rosado and Erika Van Pelt to move on as wildcards.
Next week, the top 13 contestants will perform songs by the late Whitney Houston before another elimination show.
