Natalia Estemirova, a prominent Russian human rights activist who had been investigating abuses in Chechnya, has been found murdered in the North Caucasus.
Estemirova was reportedly abducted on Wednesday as she left her home in Chechnya and her body was later found in the neighboring republic of Ingushetia. The Chechen interior ministry confirmed Estemirova’s death. A statement was released by a spokeswoman for the office revealing, “The body had two wounds to the head, it was clear she had been murdered in the morning.”
According to witnesses Estemirova had been leaving for work Wednesday morning when several assailants grabbed her and left in a van.
