Katy Perry: No Connection Between Divorce and “Part Of Me”

Katy Perry has put to rest rumors of a connection between her newest hit “Part of Me” and her divorce from Russell Brand. Although some of the lyrics – like, “You can keep the diamond ring, it don't mean nothing anyway/ In fact, you can keep everything — except for me” – seem to relate to the end of her marriage, Perry tells MTV News the song is not about Brand.

"I wrote it two years ago, which is funny because everybody is like 'God, it sounds so current.’ And some people that I work with were like 'You should just say you wrote it a couple of weeks ago.' I'm like 'I'm not a d---, I'm going to tell the truth.' I wrote it two years ago when I was writing and recording Teenage Dream, [but] it didn't feel right on the record. I would've had to take out one of my other songs that [made the album] a nice, complete package,” Perry explains.

Perry, 27, and Brand, 36, split last December after one year of marriage. They reached a divorce settlement out of court and waived their right to a trial. "The parties have entered into a comprehensive written settlement of all issues, including, without limitation, with respect to the property to be confirmed or assigned to each party,” court documents filed in February state.

Brand will receive no spousal support from Perry, although under California law he was entitled to half of the money she earned during their marriage since they did not have a pre-nuptial agreement. Perry is estimated to be worth $70 million while Brand is said to be worth $20 million. Perry also requested that her name be changed back to Katheryn Elizabeth Hudson.
