Afghan Village Buried In Avalanche, 39 Confirmed Dead

An avalanche in northeast Afghanistan left a remote village buried in snow Tuesday. Local authorities say dozens of people have been confirmed dead and at least 6 people were injured.

A spokesman for the Badakshan province governor said the avalanche hit Shirinazen, a village near the Tajikistan border. At least 20 houses were buried and 39 people have been confirmed dead so far. Dozens of others remain trapped under the snow. Local authorities expect the death toll to rise.

Badakhshan Red Crescent Director Nasir Hemat said about 190 people lived in Shirinazen. Rescue teams arrived in Shirinazen by helicopter and are currently searching for survivors.

No others details were immediately available.
