A UN refugee agency official working at the Katcha Garhi camp in the volatile northwest Pakistani city of Peshawar was shot and killed during a failed kidnapping attempt by gunmen.
According to police four armed men attempted to kidnap the official when they were engaged by a security officer. The official, a Pakistani, was killed in the gunfight as was the security guard.
A UN spokesman told the AFP news agency “A national staff of UNHCR at the Katcha Garhi camp has been a victim of a kidnapping attempt that turned into a shooting.” The spokesman went on to say the official had been shot several times in the chest and was rushed to the hospital but was pronounced dead.
Hundreds of thousands of Pakistanis have been living in refugee camps near Peshawar as a result of clashes between army troops and Taliban insurgents in the Swat valley.
