Tom Watson turned back the clock on Thursday as the 59-year-old fired a stunning 5-under, 65 in the opening round of the British Open at Turnberry, placing his name atop the leader board. While Watson seemed to play flawless the opposite was true for Tiger Woods who struggled throughout the day and finished with a 1-over, 71.
Watson has won the British Open five times but hasn’t fired a 65 in the tournament since 1994, the last time Major was played at Turnberry. On the day the American sank five birdies and managed to save par on a number of occasions to finish with the impressive round.
Watson wasn’t alone in putting together an impressive opening round as John Senden, Steve Stricker, Camilo Villegas, Stewart Cink and Mathew Goggin each finished their day at 4-under.
For Woods the day was an absolute disappointment as he wasted perfect conditions to post a low number. Instead he struggled with his shot, posting four bogies to offset his three pars.
