Cards take game 1 of World Series over rested Tigers

Game 1 goes to Cards take lead in best of 7 World Series against Detroit Tigers.

The Cardinals came out on top of game 1. While the Detroit Tigers had a week off to rest the Cardinals had to go all 7 games against the New York Mets to finally make it to the World Series and they made the best of it.

While Detroit got off to an early 1 run lead the Cards only allowed 1 more run in the bottom of the ninth while they added runs in the 2nd, 3rd and 6th inning securing game 1 by a margin of  7 to 2.

The stars of game 1 for the Cards were no other than Albert Pujols who has been less than steller at the plate in the post season and Scott Rolen who got the Cards on the board with a second inning homer off Verlander. Verlander who was phenomenal against the Yankees didn't have that same magic tonight. Other Cardinals with RBI's were C. Duncan, centerfielder Jim Edmonds and Juan Encarnacion.

The Cards were able to go to their bullpen late in the game while Reyes pitched 8 solid innings giving up 4 hits and striking out 4. The only long ball by the Tigers was given up in the 9th by Reyes with no one on to Monroe. Braden Looper was brought in by Tony La russa to close down Detroit, taking homefield advantage away from Detroit. While the Cards saved their bullpen Detroit while well rested utilized 6 pitches. Jason Grilli, Rodney, Ledezma, Jones and Walker were all used after Justin Verlander was pulled in the 5th.

Game 2 is Sunday night and we will see Kenny Rogers who has been an ace in this post season and Jeff Weaver who is 2-1 with a 2.16 ERA in three starts this post season. Both Kenny Rogers and Jeff Weaver pitched for the Yankees in the past who were sent home by the Tigers in the first round.
