A 19-year-old University of Maryland student was taken into police custody Sunday after posting a threatening message on reddit.com. Police say Alexander Song wrote about carrying out a shooting at the College Park campus that would “kill enough people to make it national news.” Song also warned readers to "stay away from the Mall tomorrow at 1:30.”
Police department Capt. Marc Limansky said at least three people, including a former University of Maryland student, notified the university about the threats Saturday night. Two of the callers had been in contact with Song on omegle.com, a text and video chat site.
Song was taken into custody on campus around 10 a.m. Sunday and immediately hospitalized for an emergency psychiatric evaluation. He faces a misdemeanor charge of disturbing the orderly conduct of school activities. Song was not armed when he was arrested and it does not appear he had access to any weapons, according authorities.
Song has been temporarily suspended from school and is not allowed on campus.
