Cards fold as the Gambler shuts down St. Louis; Detroit Tigers even up the World Series 1-1 with 3-1 win.

Kenny Rogers gave up an infield single to Scott Rolen in the top of the first and then pitched no hit baseball for the next 6 1/3 innings to shut down the St. Louis bats

Detroit struck Cardinals starter Jeff Weaver in the bottom of the first. The former Tiger gave up a solo homerun to Craig Monroe and a two out RBI double to Carlos Guillen and Detroit built an early 2-0 lead.

The 41-year-old Kenny Rogers continued his amazing run in the post season and matched the intensity that he displayed in Detroit’s American League playoff run against the New York Yankees and Oakland A’s.

The Tigers added a third run in the fifth inning when Carlos Guillen hit a triple down the right field line and scored on Sean Casey’s two out single to right.

In the top of the eighth Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina led off with a single to right to snap Rogers’ string of 6 1/3 innings of hitless baseball. A fielder’s choice force out at second and a double play ground ball off the bat of David Eckstein ended any threat of the Cardinals cutting into the Tigers 3-0 lead. Kenny Rogers has now thrown 23 consecutive innings of shutout baseball in this years post season. The longest streak in MLB history is held by Christy Mathewson who threw 27 straight scoreless innings in post season play.

Todd Jones came on in the top of the ninth and gave up one run but held on to preserve the win 3-1.

Game three of the World Series will be played Tuesday night in St. Louis.
