NATIVE AMERICAN MEETING IN ALBUQUERQUE FRIDAY TO HELP COMBAT SUBSTANCE ABUSE

Native American youths from all over the country are meeting in Albuquerque on Friday to discuss different ways to stop the growing substance abuse problem amongst their culture. Substance abuse has been nominated at the forefront of issues to discuss this year, according to members of the United National Indian Tribal Youth, Inc. The event is scheduled as a 5-day long conference where members of UNITY will discuss ways to prevent youths from substance and alcohol abuse and also celebrate cultural traditions. Youths attending the conference are urged to share their ideas for solutions with elderly tribal members. Conference attendees are encouraged to act as role models for everyone in their community.

The problem of substance abuse reaches far beyond that just of Native Americans. Drug and alcohol abuse affects everyone, whether it is you or someone you know. Unfortunately, it is prevalent in every culture. Substance abuse far too often has fatal outcomes that we have seen time and time again. Conferences, like the one mentioned above give awareness to this epidemic and offer insight on new ways for family members and people struggling with this disease to work together to come up with new strategies to stop substance abuse from claiming another person’s life.

SouthCoast Recovery stands out among all other Rehabilitation Centers as it has devoted an entire program to Native American substance abuse. The program incorporates many ideals of Native American culture in a way that is familiar to clients, making it easier for them to adjust to the recovery process.

SouthCoast Recovery has partnered up with AAIR, The Access to American Indian Recovery program to form their American Indian/ Alaskan Native program. The program includes taking holistic approaches such as massage therapy and herbal medicine treatments.

SouthCoast Recovery’s American Indian/ Alaskan Native program also offers activities such as drum circles, pow-wows, sweat lodges, soapstone sculpturing, basket weaving and storytelling. All of these are designed to be a familiar way for our clients to begin their road to recovery. These methods have all been proven to be extremely effective.

The Native American battle with substance abuse is increasing a fast pace which is why SouthCoast Recovery is so proud to be affiliated with AAIR and help American Indians and Alaskan Natives everywhere live clean, happy, sober lives.
