Pradaxa is an anticoagulant medication that is used by patients with atrial fibrillation to prevent blood clots. The drug was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in October 2010. Shortly after the drug became available on the market, patients began complaining of adverse side effects. Many patients suffered serious bleeding events after using the medication. In some incidents, the bleeding events turned fatal.  Boehringer Ingelheim, the German company that manufactures Pradaxa, has reported at least 260 deaths related to the drug.

In December 2011, the FDA began investigating claims that Pradaxa is associated with internal bleeding. Internal bleeding is a common risk for anticoagulants, but the FDA is investigating if Pradaxa bleeding events are more common than expected. European and Japanese regulators are also reviewing Pradaxa bleeding cases.

Patients should be aware of Pradaxa side effects. Patients should contact their doctors immediately if they exhibit signs of bleeding such as pink or brown urine, red or black stools, nosebleeds, coughing up blood or unusual bleeding.
