Steve Marino, playing in his first British Open, managed to follow his first round 67 with a second round 68 on Friday to take sole possession atop the leaderboard at Turnberry.
The 29-year-old Marino looked a bit shaky on the front nine as he bogied 2, 4 and seven but birdies on 3, 5 and 6 left him even heading into the turn. A bogey on 10 left him 1-over but he made up for that with a birdie on 14 and then an eagle on 17 for a 2-under on the day and a 5-under after 135 after the first two rounds.
As for Tom Watson, who sat in second after round one, the day started promising as he birdied his opening hole but then went on an ugly stretch of five bogies over the next six holes and it appeared the 59-year-old had lost his magic. Watson closed the front nine with a birdie and then another on 11 to pull back to 2-over for the day and 3-under overall with seven holes left in his round.
Round One leader Miguel Jimenez failed to match the incredible 64 that he shot on Thursday and shot a 3-over 73 on the day and now sits at 3-under, 137 after the second round.
