Northern Japan was rocked by two strong earthquakes Wednesday evening, just three days after marking the one year anniversary of a devastating earthquake and tsunami that took 19,000 lives.
According to the U.S. Geological Survey, a 6.8 magnitude tremor struck about 170 miles off the east coast. A tsunami advisory was issued and several coastal communities ordered evacuations. The Japanese Meteorological Agency lifted the advisory after minimal swelling of 8 inches or lower was detected on Hokkaido island and areas of Aomori prefecture.
The second earthquake, a 6.1 magnitude, shook Tokyo and surrounding areas about 3 hours after the first tremor. The epicenter was located off the coast of Chiba at a depth of 9 miles.
The Japanese Meteorological Agency said both earthquakes are aftershocks of last year’s powerful 9.0 magnitude earthquake. No damages, injuries or deaths have been reported.
