After two days at Turnberry the 2009 British Open Leaderboard is certainly turning some heads as an unlikely pair of Americans, Steve Marino and Tom Watson, are currently sharing the top spot with a 5-under 135.
While Watson has won five British Open championships nobody pegged the 59-year-old as a serious contender heading into Thursday but on Friday he showed true grit as he overcame an ugly front nine to finish at even par and remain at 5-under for the tournament.
As for Marino, this is his first British Open and nobody thought he would know how to handle the conditions that make veterans cringe. Instead of being satisfied with just being there Marino followed his 67 on Thursday with a 68 on Friday to hold at 5-under, tied with a legend.
For Tiger Woods the British Open has been nothing short of a disaster as he now sits is danger of missing the cut, something practically unheard of for the world’s number one. Woods is sitting at 5-over for the tournament and the projected cut line is 4-under.
