HBO Cancels Luck After Third Horse’s Death

HBO announced Wednesday the cancellation of Luck, a horse racing drama starring Dustin Hoffman and Nick Nolte. The network’s decision came just one day after a third horse died during production.

"While we maintained the highest safety standards possible, accidents unfortunately happen and it is impossible to guarantee they won't in the future. Accordingly, we have reached this difficult decision,” HBO said in a statement.

Production on the second season was underway at the Santa Anita Park racetrack in Arcadia, California on Tuesday when a 5-year-old thoroughbred had to be euthanized after sustaining a severe head injury. HBO said the horse was being led to a stall when it reared back and fell. Two other horses died during the filming of season one in 2010 and 2011. Both were euthanized after being injured during racing scenes.

Executive producers David Milch and Michael Mann said the decision to cancel the show was heartbreaking. "The two of us loved this series, loved the cast, crew and writers," they added. "This has been a tremendous collaboration and one that we plan to continue in the future."
