Russian Human-Rights Group Suspends Work in Chechnya Following Murder of Activist

Russian human-rights group Memorial has announced they will suspend work in Chechnya following the murder of activist Natalia Estemirova earlier this week.

Memorial has accused the Kremlin-backed Chechen government of being responsible for Estemirova’s murder, an accusation that President Ramzan Kadyrov has denied. Estemirova had been one of the most prominent figures in investigating alleged abuses by Chechnya’s government.

On Wednesday Estemirova was abducted as she left her Chechen home, hours later her bullet-riddled body was found dumped in a forest.

Estemirova belonged to the rights group Memorial which has since stated it would not put their colleagues’ lives at risk in Chechnya any longer, declaring their work in the area suspended.
