It has been 26 years since Tom Watson won his fifth British Open title and his eight Major but on Sunday the 59-year-old American will be entering the final round at Turnberry with a one stroke lead and on the brink of history.
Watson survived yet another difficult day, battling windy and cold conditions to finish at 1-over after 18 holes and now sits at 4-under for the tournament. Once again Watson played catch-up late as he birdied two of his final three holes to jump in front of Ross Fisher and Matthew Goggin on the leaderboard. That late run made up for bogies on 9, 12 and 15 that had dropped him down to ninth.
Conditions played a major role in the outcome on Saturday as only five players managed to card a below par performance, significantly different than round one when 50 players accomplished the feat.
For Watson, a victory at the British Open would make him the oldest winner in the 138 years of the event, breaking the mark set by Old Tom Morris who was 46 years-old when he set the mark in 1867.
