Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu Defends Building Projects in Jerusalem

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has defended the rights of Jewish people to continue building and living in homes in East Jerusalem, rejecting reported requests from U.S. officials to suspend such projects.

Netanyahu was addressing a specific building project in the mainly Arab East Jerusalem Sheikh Jarrah district that involves 20 apartments. U.S. President Barack Obama has called on Netanyahu to freeze plans for construction as a means of advancing a peace deal with Palestinians yet the Israeli PM appears unwilling to bend on the issue.

Palestinians have called for their own state and want to establish East Jerusalem as the capital but Netanyahu, during his weekly Cabinet meeting, stated “Unified Jerusalem is the capital of the Jewish people and the state of Israel. Our sovereignty over it is unquestionable.”

Earlier in his address Netanyahu told the Cabinet, “We cannot accept the idea that Jews will not have the right to live and buy (homes) anywhere in Jerusalem.”
