Alberto Contador surged from third place to the overall lead at the Tour de France on Sunday after using a powerful surge on the final climb of Stage 15 to cross the line first and claim the yellow jersey from Rinaldo Nocentini.
Contador tackled the first Alpine climb of the Tour de France with little trouble, breaking from the pack during the uphill climb at finish of the 128.9-mile ride. The Spaniard finished 42 seconds ahead of Andy Schleck and Bradley Wiggins followed in third at 50 seconds back.
Lance Armstrong started the day in fourth place but managed to climb up the leaderboard to second. While the seven-time Tour de France winner improved his overall position on the leaderboard he trails Contador by a significant 1 min 37 sec, a difficult margin to overcome.
Wiggins is now third overall, trailing Armstrong by nine seconds.
