Civilian Helicopter Crashes in Southern Afghanistan, at least 16 Dead, Several Injured

A civilian helicopter crashed while trying to take off in the southern Afghan city of Kandahar on Sunday, killing at least 16 people and injuring another five.

NATO officials have ruled out the involvement of insurgents in the crash but the cause of the accident has not been determined. The crash occurred at Kandahar airfield, the largest air base used by NATO in southern Afghanistan.

While NATO utilizes the air field it is also used by civilian aircrafts on a regular basis. According to NATO all those killed in the crash were said to be civilians. The helicopter is being reported as a Russian-built Mi-8 owned by the air company Vertical-T.
