Stewart Cink captured his first Major after forcing a playoff and then beating fan-favorite Tom Watson in the four-hole showdown in the final round of the British Open Championship on Sunday.
Cink managed to sneak in a 12-foot birdie putt on the 18th hole to move to 2-under and then had to wait and when Watson missed his 8-foot par putt on the final hole and finished with a bogey that set up the playoff. With momentum on his side Cink then attacked the first playoff hole and finished with a par while Watson settled for a bogey.
After the two exchanged pars on number six things began to unravel for Watson as he double-bogied on 17 as Cink sank a birdie putt for a four stroke lead heading into the fourth and final hole for the playoff. It was clear that Watson, aiming for his sixth British Open title, but when he finished with a bogey on 18 he still received a huge ovation from the crowd.
For Cink, the win finally gave him that elusive Major that had been so close on a number of occasions yet had somehow slipped away.
