Frank McCourt, the best-selling Irish-American author of the Pulitzer Prize-winning memoir Angela’s Ashes, dies on Sunday after a lengthy battle with cancer. McCourt was 78-years-old.
The beloved McCourt shot to fame in 1996 following the publication of Angela’s Ashes, a detailed account of growing up in poverty in the Irish city of Limerick. Prior to the book’s publication McCourt taught high school in New York.
McCourt was actually born in New York but moved to Ireland with his family during the Great Depression.
According to McCourt’s publicist the author had been suffering from meningitis and had been treated for melanoma. The cause of death was aid to be metastatic melanoma.
